The High Plains Regional Outreach Center, Inc., which began in 2006 works hard to watch out for the people coming from tribes within North Dakota boundaries.
“We’re focusing on the youth, elderly and homeless,” said Ben Red Horse, one of two vice presidents of the group in a brief interview Saturday.
Red Horse said in the past two years, the group has done several things to reach out to the people who need it the most. This past New Year’s Eve, they helped move a family that was evicted from their home. Flyers placed at the public library and other public places help draw the youth into special programs and events. Last year, they held a well-attended Easter egg hunt at Bismarck’s Kiwanis park, and recently the group delivered deer meat to several elderly people in the community.
In 2007, the group held a powwow. “We had a good turnout,” Red Horse said.
Another powwow is planned for Friday, February 13th in conjunction with the United Tribes Technical College and will be held on the campus.
The group meets every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at the ND/SD Native American Business Development Center on the United Tribes campus.
There are many other local organizations that we work with. Carrie’s Kids, Burleigh County Social Services, Ruth Meiers, Career Options & many more.
