Archive for January, 2009

This article printed in Minot Daily News, which announces that an asteroid has recently been named for North Dakota, is one of the most interesting news pieces I’ve read all week.
From the article:
University of North Dakota graduate student Vishnu Reddy discovered the celestial rock in 2003, using a telescope at an observatory in Arizona.
Reddy, a [...]

Leave it to Rob Port to put things in perspective.  In this blog post, he explains how being able to buy American flags not made in the USA is one of our basic freedoms and something we ought to protect.  I hadn’t even given this issue much thought until I read this.

Kudos to Doug Leier for putting together a very comprehensive update of what’s going on in the Legislature regarding the outdoors.  I especially appreciate his coverage of House Bill 1045, which could prevent further separation of hunting rights from the surface estate.
It seems that severance of rights is going to be a big issue this [...]

Pharmacy Debate In North Dakota

This isn’t an issue I’ve covered yet, but it’s one that’s percolating through plenty of newspapers and blogs.  Should North Dakota change its law, which I understand says pharmacists have to own at least 51 percent of any pharmacy in the state?  Or should we change the law so that big box pharmacies can come [...]

I was just reading through the new Business Watch magazine.  Apparently North Dakota was the only state in the region to expand its economy this past November.  Our uenemployement is still low and our population grew, too.   From the article:
The burea’s most recent extimate put the state population at 641,481 in July 2008, up from 637,907 [...]

As the temperature dipped into the minus double-digits this week, my family and I had the opportunity to experience some of the adventures you can only have in North Dakota.
Car trouble was easy. We’ve done that one before.
Finding a way to get our youngest daughter home from school on our record snow day (5.4 inches in [...]

According to this Prairie Business Magazine article, Basin Electric Power Cooperative has two wind projects near Minot, North Dakota that “are expanding the traditional boundaries of wind farms.”  This is a good spot to read about how North Dakota is leading out in wind energy production and also in an interesting wind-to-hydrogen project.
From the article:
“Our [...]

About Gov. and Mickey Hoeven

I’m sure Gov. and Mickey Hoeven are very sincere about this kind of thing.  That makes them true assets to our state.
North Dakota is still a haven for people who have traditional religous beliefs as well as people who have different frames of reference.

North Dakota Capitol Arboretum Trail

With all the new snow (and it’s lots) and being up at the Capitol, I’ve been wondering how the Capitol arboretum looks.  I’ve only ever walked the trail in the summer or fall–never when there’s snow out–but I bet it’s beautiful in winter, too.
I did find a site where I could read more about it.  [...]

Myra Pearson, chairwoman of the Spirit Lake Tribe  is very well-spoken.  The feeling she portrayed during her State of the Tribal-State Relations address was one of hope and collaboration.  I believe the entire address is printed in the House of Representatives journal for Thursday, January 8.
Here are more comments.
